Chiltern Mainline Platform Extensions

Value £2.2m

Client: Network Rail

Duration: 14 Weeks

This design and build scheme project involved the extension of five platforms at three stations in compressed timescales within 5hr ROR possessions. The stations were High Wycombe, Princess Risborough and Beaconsfield.

Works comprised of:

  • All design, including facilitating site investigation works
  • Liaison with TOC to negotiate access and compound areas
  • Implementation of three site simultaneously
  • Lightweight fill replacement strategy at Princess Risborough Station to remove piling requirement
  • Signal replacement and commissioning
  • Management of DNO relocation for High Wycombe Station
  • Installation of lighting and relocation of driver SPT’s
  • Platform construction using Network Rail standard details delivered by in house tradesmen

 Key Challenges/Successes:

The package of work was awarded with highly constrained programme aspirations from the client due to CP4 franchise commitments to the TOC Chiltern Railways.

All schemes were completed in a live station environment with maximum 5hr possessions and the entire project was completed on site in 14 weeks.

High Wycombe platform extension required the relocation of an existing DNO supply to the station by a third party which was managed by MPB directly. The new platform at High Wycombe also required the relocation of a banner repeater signal which added to the complexity of the project.

Ground conditions at Princess Risborough were such that piling would have been necessary. However, MPB worked closely with designers Atkins to develop a lightweight fill replacement strategy that allowed the scheme to be completed without the use of piles.
